I was given a Kona Solids Jelly Roll for Christmas in a lovely range of toning colours - so putting my mind to work I decided to buy another Jelly Roll with similar colours. My choice was one by Moda (Batiks) and called Aurora. The idea being to make a series of HST's (Half Square Triangles) and make a Queen sized quilt. I spent a few hours playing with matching one batik with a solid colour until I was happy with the selection. However, some of the batiks were very 'stripey' and I decided against using them. Some of the solid colours did not 'go' at all, but I managed to match them with some batiks I already had. In the end, I had just four strips I wasn't able to use.
I did a couple of tests to work out just how many HST's I would get out of two strips sewn together. The result was 19. I have had a quick play on the design wall, but at this stage I am not sure how I will put them altogether. I have never made HST's this way before, but they were very quick to sew and cut. Sewing two of the long 2.5" strips together on each side, and then cutting, you get 3" unfinished HST's and the diagonal is on the straight grain. If I had cut 2.5" squares from the jelly roll strips the resulting HST's would have been smaller and the diagonal line on the cross. It will mean that when I sew all the squares together I will be sewing on the cross - hmm.....not sure how difficult that will be.
I am putting this project aside for the moment though as I am using up some 2.5" scraps from my batik wall hanging to make four place mats. I also have a number of 2" squares too, so will see how many mug rugs they will make!
