Before Christmas I had bought some Robert Kaufman fabric called 'Dutch Cottage' with the view of making a 4 patch posy quilt for Mum. After getting it home and cutting some trial 3" squares I realised it would not really work - so put the fabric to one side. I obviously made a different quilt as shown in an earlier post for Mum. So this week, I took out the Dutch Cottage fabric and looked through my stash to find some coordinating fabric. It took me ages to work out if I had enough for a lap quilt, and in the end began cutting. I initially only selected the cream and red, but didn't have enough of the red so added the blue to pick out that colour in the Kaufman fabric.
No idea why I decided upon this particular block - I saw it demonstrated on the web somewhere but have worked out my own sizes. I think on the web the block was much bigger. Mine will finish at 8". I have enough to make a 5 x 9 block top with an 8" border. This should then fit easily on my quilting frame. I have already realised that there are a number of ways to lay out the blocks, so at this stage have no idea what I will select. Once sewn the red and blue squares will be appear thinner obviously - so the effect will be different again.
The blue fabric though appears rather 'in your face' compared to the red......shame.
At this stage I have not really thought about the actual quilting, but may shy away from an all over pantograph, and try some individual free motion quilting for the separate blocks. We shall see - early days yet!
