Quilting Group New Year

We had our first meeting of the new year.  I took along my 4 patch posy (or stack and whack) quilt to finish hand sewing on the binding.  I only managed to get one length done as quite a few people came over to look at what I was doing.  Many were not familiar with the technique, and some were curious as to how I had quilted the piece using just my sewing machine! I will post a picture of the quilt when it is finally finished.

We were given a new task of producing random log cabin blocks for the 'raffle quilt'.  I took two centres and some off cut strips.  As precision was not the order of the day, it didn't take me long to do my two, plus a third one using my own off cuts.  The idea was to oversize so that eventually all the blocks would then be cut to precise 12.5".

Cat and Koi Wall Hanging

The two different sized Maple Leaf Blocks
I had spent a lot of time last week trying to work out a wall hanging I wanted to do.  I had sketched out my idea, so began pulling together my fabrics and working out how much more I would need.  I was eager to begin so cut out enough for 4 maple leaf blocks using 2.5" squares to see how things would look.   Once completed I put them on the design wall then had a shock.  I had miscalculated completely.  If I had carried on using 2.5" squares or strips, my wall hanging would have been over 14' long!  OK for those who live in a barn or who have double height walls, but I would have had nowhere to display it once finished.  So back to the drawing board.  Rather disappointed I put it to one side - but then decided to make some smaller maple leaf blocks using 2" squares.  I will now need to buy some more batiks - so will wait awhile before I come back to this one.
