Geese Wall Panel

Many many years ago (over 30 at least!) I saved some pictures from an RSPB magazine of the artist Colin Paynton's engravings.  I admired his work and always knew that one day I would create a fabric panel based on his work.  Well yesterday I made a start.  I used a piece of heavy white egyptian cotton from the edge of an old sheet, some iron on wadding and linen for the backing.  I cheated by enlarging the original picture and then traced the elements I wanted to use onto the fabric using a makeshift light table.

I then set up my sewing machine, selected some threads and began to 'quilt' the lines of the water.  I used a variety of couched and sewn threads and a variety of stitches on my machine.  At some point I changed my sewing foot to the freeform embroidery/quilting foot and inserted the supplied cover plate rather than dropping the feed dogs - then freemotioned the lines that were a little more wiggely. So far I am quite pleased with the result.  I am keeping to the black and white colours and leaving the quilting to provide the 'shadows' and 'greys'.
Makower fabric - ? Stripe (name unknown)

A lady from my quilting group responded to my plea of not being able to find small black and white prints and gave me a strip of the above fabric.  It is perfect for the birds that I plan to applique onto the background.

This panel will be untouched for a couple of weeks now as I will be busy helping my daughter with her wedding invitations!  Progess of those will be shown on one of my tab pages.
