"Call of the Wild"

I bought a Hoffman panel last year with a matching length of scenic material with the idea of using it in with my 365 challenge - but in the end decided the colours didn't really go - and also the panels were too big to use without losing their impact.

On Wednesday last week I attended my quilting group and another lady brought in the same panel to show what she was planning to do - ie. cut up the individual pieces and arrange some strips of 'flying geese' around them.

This set me thinking that I could perhaps do something similar with my panel.  So today I cut up the little pictures and arranged them on top of a square quilt (back) to get an idea of the size I could play with.  I put a couple of 6" blocks from my 365 challenge and some other orphan blocks to see what it might look like adding random blocks to fill the gaps.

I plan to frame each picture first with 2" strips in a pale blue/white print so that I can trim down eventually to get all the sizing right.  I think I will search for blocks with evocative names to go with the quilt  eg. Bears Paw, Alaska, Fox & Geese, Northern Lights etc.  I think some 'Log Cabin' and Flying Geese will work too.  Oh how I like a challenge, and I think this will certainly fit that bill!  I have pulled out some fabrics similar to the colour splashes - so hope to incorporate some of them in some smaller blocks.  I might so some tiny piecing having been successful with some very small pieces in some of my 265 blocks.....we shall see.
