Painted Bobbin

Since joining my lace group I have been gifted a bobbin at the last meeting before Christmas for the past two years.   Due to Covid, we have not met as a group since January this year, and therefore missed our commemorative group bobbin.  I toyed with buying a 'covid' themed one, until our group teacher said she has ordered some for us and will  give them out at our first allowed meeting.  So I decided to have a go at painting one for myself.  I never expected it to be so hard!  I doff my hat to those who do them to sell.  I dug out my acrylic paints, I found the finest paintbrush I think you can get......I held the bobbin under my magnifying led lamp......but my first brush stroke was terrible.  I had to quickly adapt my painting technique.  In the end I had shaped groups of holly leaves, shaded and with highlights.  What is odd, is that under the magnifying glass you can see all the detail, but that detail seems to disappear when viewed normally.  I had to 'borrow' some red paint from my son as that was the one colour I didn't have.  My son paints warhammer models, so his acrylic red paint had some weird name, not scarlet or vermilion or just red.....I had to laugh.  My husband gave the bobbin a few coats of clear acrylic varnish and I think it looks OK.  I have some more plain bobbins, so might have a go at perhaps painting a new one each month especially if we are still in Covid lockdown!
